Knighthood for Boris Johnson's father not wise, says minister

Reports suggest that former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has included his father Stanley in his resignation honours list. Such lists are traditionally used by outgoing prime ministers to honour notable individuals they worked with during their tenure. Stanley Johnson is a well-known environmental campaigner and author, and is expected to be awarded a knighthood.

Inclusion of family members in such lists is not unprecedented. In 2008, then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown included his own brother Andrew in his resignation honours list, awarding him a knighthood for services to African development. However, the practice has attracted criticism in the past, with some arguing that it undermines the honours system.

The honours list is decided by the prime minister and is submitted to the Queen for final approval. It is typically published twice a year, on New Year’s Day and the Queen’s official birthday.
