UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss a long-term deal to return migrants who cross the Channel in small boats back to France. However, Macron is set to reject Sunak’s demands for Britain to return the migrants, stating that any agreement would need to be EU-wide, as France is accusing members such as Italy of failing to take back migrants. There are hopes to secure a deal in exchange for the UK accepting refugees from the EU, but there is scepticism over whether it would provide value for money, with Britain having already handed over almost £200m ($275m) to France since 2018, but 45,728 migrants still arriving in Kent last year.
