A video of cars in Beijing covered in worm-like objects has gone viral, with many social media users suggesting that the creatures had fallen from the sky. The footage has driven speculation over whether the wriggling objects are in fact worms or poplar tree seeds, while others speculate that the cars encountered a minor tornado which swept up worms which were then deposited on surfaces. It is also suggested that the warming spring conditions may be awakening hibernating worms closer to the surface. Chinese authorities have yet to comment on the matter.
Last year, security footage captured the mysterious mass death of hundreds of birds in China in a case that remained unexplained. Other strange phenomena have also been reported globally, with some suggesting that huge sinkholes in Siberia and around the world are evidence of fracking or global warming, as well as more apocalyptic theories related to concave Earths and the planet’s magnetic fields.
