China: Man found alive ‘nine years after he was cremated’

A recent case of mistaken identity has caused a family in China to be left in shock after it emerged that a relative who was thought to be dead appeared in their village nine years after the supposed accident. In 2014, the family of Zhuo Kangluo identified a body on the side of the road as his, following a car accident. After the accident, the family decided to cremate the body without an autopsy. However, in August, authorities in the Chinese village of Zhuangcheng discovered a man who had been acting “strangely” and an investigation led to a DNA test proving that he was Zhuo Kangluo.

Following the discovery of Zhuo Kangluo, his grandson was brought to the village, and he was able to identify him. The man reportedly burst into tears and wrote the names of those he was related to. However, whilst the family was left overjoyed at the return of their relative, the result of the case of mistaken identity has left them in shock. The identity of the body, which was cremated in 2014, remains unclear – and authorities in China are working to identify the body.

The case is just one of many examples in which an individual presumed dead eventually turns up alive. Such incidents have a range of causes, with missing person cases often involving individual’s leaving of their own accord or being kidnapped. There are also cases of mistaken identity, such as the Zhuo Kangluo incident, which can happen due to inaccurate identification or a lack of information. In other cases, individuals previously thought to be dead can also be found to have faked their own death for a range of reasons.
