‘SNLs’ cold open parodies the Oscars

Access Hollywood hosts Marcello Hernandez and Heidi Gardner starred in a Saturday Night Live skit about the upcoming Oscars. In the sketch, the hosts stand outside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, referencing the controversy from last year’s ceremony when Will Smith took offence to a joke at his wife’s expense. Hernandez and Gardner mention that the Academy has hired a new head of security, Mike Tyson, to keep things calm. Kenan Thompson plays the grinning Tyson, complete with an implanted AirTag in Smith’s pocket and a flamethrower for host Jimmy Kimmel.

The SNL sketch continues with interactions between the hosts and several celebrity guests arriving at the event. Sarah Sherman plays Michelle Williams’ Jewish acting coach, while Mikey Day and Molly Kearney portray Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Bowen Yang plays an abrasive Tom Cruise character named George Santos. The comedy also refers to the widespread introduction of tasers and guns among nominees and seat fillers, highlighting the new security precautions introduced for the 2022 Oscars.

The skit pokes fun at the high profile of the awards ceremony and the underlying tensions of past events. If any drama does arise, the new head of security may prefer to address it rather than Mike Tyson’s character. However, Thompson’s portrayal allowed the hosts to introduce an element of humor into the sketch. This year’s 94th Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 27, 2022. While Hernandez and Gardner’s show may provide a different perspective on the red carpet event, the Oscars will remain the most significant event on the Hollywood calendar.
