A man in the United States has sued restaurant chain Buffalo Wild Wings, accusing the company of “false and deceptive marketing” of its “boneless wings”. Aimen Halim, from Chicago, purchased the product, which he said was fried slices of chicken breast meat, rather than deboned wings, at a restaurant in Mount Prospect, Illinois. Halim claims that he and other consumers would not have bought the product if they had been aware of what it was, and that the deception has caused him “injury in fact”. He is seeking restitution though the level of monetary damages is unspecified.
The lawsuit argues that other businesses, such as Domino’s and Papa John’s, sell comparable products, such as “boneless chicken” and “Chicken Poppers”, without calling them wings. Halim is acting on behalf of “thousands” of consumers who have purchased the “boneless wings” at one of the 1,200 Buffalo Wild Wings outlets.
Buffalo Wild Wings has responded to the legal action with a tweet, stating: “It’s true. Our boneless wings are all white meat chicken. Our hamburgers contain no ham. Our buffalo wings are 0% buffalo.” The company and its parent, Inspire Brands, are the defendants in the lawsuit.
This week, several other global food chains, including Burger King and McDonalds, announced initiatives to introduce more plant-based menu options. Burger King is set to launch a plant-based version of its Chicken Royale burger in the UK, made from ingredients such as soy and wheat, and serving a meat-free version of its signature Whopper. McDonald’s launched a new vegan burger in Sweden and Finland called McVegan, and is expected to extend the product across other nations. A recent poll by Foodable Labs found that vegan and veggie menu items are now the “biggest trend” in the restaurant industry.
