Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was caught on camera celebrating Ireland’s Six Nations victory from an Irish pub in Washington DC. Varadkar took time out from his St Patrick’s Day visit to the United States to watch his country beat England and claim a historic grand slam. The video recording of the celebration was shared on Twitter and has since gone viral.
Varadkar was seen wearing a green sweater and a tricolour scarf as he watched the match at the pub. As soon as Ireland had won, Varadkar was seen embracing those around him, including members of the Irish embassy in Washington. He was also filmed singing traditional Irish songs with the crowd.
During his visit to the United States, Varadkar met with US President Joe Biden and attended an event at The White House in which Niall Horan performed. Other world leaders sent Varadkar warm congratulatory messages on Twitter after the Irish team’s victory over England.
Ireland beat old rivals England on home turf at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The 32-18 win was particularly significant as it marked Ireland’s third Six Nations Championship in the last five years. The victory also secured Ireland’s third Grand Slam in history after previously winning in 1948 and 2009.
The Six Nations is an annual rugby tournament contested by England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Ireland managed to win all five of their matches, including a crucial victory over France in Paris. The competition was postponed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2021 edition was played in empty stadiums due to government restrictions.
