Kelly McCreary, who has played Maggie Pierce on Grey’s Anatomy for the last nine seasons, is leaving the ABC drama. McCreary’s final episode as a series regular will air on April 13 but it is expected that the character will appear down the line as well. The departure of McCreary comes just a month after Ellen Pompeo, who played Meredith Grey, said goodbye to the show. It is unclear how McCreary’s character will be written out of the series.
In a statement, McCreary said, “To spend nine years exploring a character inside and out, while reaching a global audience with impactful stories, is a rare gift. It has afforded me an opportunity to collaborate with, learn from, and be inspired by countless brilliant artists both in front of and behind the camera.” She added, “Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life and I leave with profound gratitude for every step of this journey. I am excited for this next chapter, and what the future holds.”
Grey’s Anatomy has seen several cast members exit over the years, including Sandra Oh, who played Cristina Yang, and Katherine Heigl, who played Izzie Stevens. The show is currently in its 17th season and recently broke the record as the longest-running scripted medical drama on television.
Showrunner Krista Vernoff commented on McCreary’s departure, calling her a “writer’s dream come true; brilliant, nuanced, thoughtful, and kind.” Ellen Pompeo also praised McCreary’s work on the series, saying “Thanks so much for your super hard work and the valuable contributions you’ve made to the Grey’s legacy. Looking forward to your next chapter.”
Despite the departure of McCreary, Grey’s Anatomy continues to be one of ABC’s highest-rated shows. The series has maintained a loyal fan base over the years and continues to draw in new viewers, making it one of the most successful dramas on television. As for what the future holds for Grey’s Anatomy, fans will just have to wait and see what twists and turns lie ahead in the show’s ongoing storyline.
