Australia: Family wake up to find man asleep on sofa after break-in

A family in Coomera, Australia, woke up to a bizarre sight over the weekend when they found an unknown man sleeping on their sofa. The footage shows the intruder slumped on the cushions with his jeans pulled down, revealing his boxers. The homeowner can be heard on the phone describing the sleepy stranger, while the video was later shown on 9News Gold Coast and quickly became popular across social media. Some Twitter users speculated that the man may have stumbled into the wrong house after a night out, but others made more serious comments about the breach of personal security.
Australian police did not charge the unknown intruder, who was found asleep on the sofa, reportedly due to concerns from the homeowner who did not want to press charges. One Twitter user claimed that such incidents were common in Coomera, however, those living in the area have mixed reactions to the whimsical mix-up. Social media users mostly took the video as a light-hearted incident, though some pointed out that it was a serious breach of privacy for someone to break into family homes. The identity of the intruder, and how he ended up in the Coomera living room, remains unknown.
Similar incidents in Australia and the US have occurred, such as when a trespasser in the US began mowing the lawn of a home in April 2022. Marcus Renard Hubbard’s entry into a family yard was part of a misguided April Fool’s prank. Security footage showed him nonchalantly pushing the lawn mower along the property’s garden fence. In both cases, the intruders did not face any legal consequences.
