Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has congratulated England striker Harry Kane on breaking Wayne Rooney’s goal-scoring record, in a FaceTime call praised by The Telegraph as “an unusual and interesting political move”. Kane now has 54 strikes for his country. Sunak described Kane as “an amazing role model for the country”, before suggesting he aimed to beat Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal-scoring record. Kane, who beat Tottenham’s Jimmy Greaves’ club record last month, responded affirmatively, saying: “Yeah it’s definitely there… I’m 29, so hopefully got plenty of years left. So for sure it’d something I’d love to do”.
The call might be seen as further evidence that Kane is set to remain in the Premier League, despite being widely linked with major European clubs in the summer transfer window. Manchester United and Bayern Munich are both reportedly vying for his signature. Kane’s departure from Tottenham looks increasingly likely, with the club unlikely to win any trophies in the near future. Kane’s desire to establish himself as the greatest English striker, and possibly even the greatest Premier League striker, could, therefore, appeal to United who are looking for a talisman to add to their attack.

The FA and Wembley have invited hundreds of refugees residing in the UK after fleeing war in their homeland to watch their team’s opening game of the campaign. Around 4,200 Ukraine fans will be at a sold-out Wembley in total.
The news comes as FIFA president Gianni Infantino again defended his organisation against charges of corruption, days after the release of hacked documents which claim to highlight attempts to influence the election of former president Sepp Blatter.
