Former US President Donald Trump is facing multiple investigations, lawsuits and controversies. The Justice Department is investigating whether Trump mishandled national defense information and White House documents when they were taken to his Mar-a-Lago resort after he left office. Trump could be in violation of a criminal law prohibiting the removal or destruction of official government records. The National Archives has said that at least 15 boxes of White House records, including some classified records, were recovered from Mar-a-Lago.
The special counsel’s investigation into Trump’s period after the 2020 presidential election loss to Joe Biden includes leading up to the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. As part of its investigation, key White House insiders including former Vice President Mike Pence, Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner have been asked to testify. Trump has tried to block advisers from testifying, citing executive and attorney-client privileges.
Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis is leading a special grand jury investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn Biden’s victory in Georgia. The grand jury recommended charges against more than a dozen people and suggested perjury charges beconsidered against some of those who testified. Willis is considering bringing conspiracy and racketeering charges against Trump or his allies.
Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, is also facing major legal trouble after a court suspended his law license in New York over false claims about election fraud. Giuliani, who served as Trump’s personal attorney, is also facing a defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems, which alleges that he spread false conspiracy theories against the company.
Besides the investigations, suits and controversies he is embroiled in, Trump is still popular with his base, and many have not given up on the possibility of him running for the presidency again in 2024. He has continued to promote falsehoods about the 2020 election and has not accepted the results. However, as the investigations continue, they could bring more legal trouble for Trump and his circle.
