Japanese horror manga creator Junji Ito’s short story, Bloodsucking Darkness, will be made into a live-action film, according to Variety. Jeff Howard, the writer and executive producer of Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, is on board. Ito, who is producing the movie, said, “I hope I get to see the trailer in my dreams tonight.” Ito’s work has been extensively adapted, with many stories such as Scarecrow and Uzumaki being turned into anime shows. Several of his stories have been made into live-action features as well.
Bloodsucking Darkness was first included in the Voices in the Dark anthology in 2003. It revolves around Nami, a young woman with an eating disorder who begins to vomit blood. Her life is transformed when she meets Kazuya, and the two connect before circumstances take a turn, bringing vampire bats into the storyline. The story has been published multiple times under different titles such as Blood-Slurping Darkness or The Dark Drinks Blood.
The vampire anthology, Smashed, has two additional projects that Fangoria Studios intends to convert to film after Bloodsucking Darkness’s release. Although it is not yet determined, Fangoria expects a director for the project to be announced soon, according to the Variety report. Howard had high praise for the source material, stating, “I chased after [Bloodsucking Darkness] with everything I had. When I found out a live-action Junji Ito adaptation was going to happen […] I just couldn’t live with anyone else getting there before me.”
Junji Ito’s most recent adaptation is Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, which premiered on Netflix in January. Audiences will have to wait for Bloodsucking Darkness to hit theaters or streaming platforms such as Shudder.
