Australian artist Dani Reynolds has beaten the Guinness World Record for the widest wig with an 8ft 6ins creation. Reynolds spent more than two months constructing the headpiece costing AUD$4,000 (£2,172). Artist Meg Wilson also helped with the construction, using a support structure made from a bike helmet, PVC pipe, pool noodles, cable ties and aluminium rods. Reynolds said the hardest part of the wig’s construction was ensuring that it was well-balanced and not too heavy to be worn on her head.
The previous record was set in 2017 by US actress Drew Barrymore, whose wig measured more than 7ft. Reynolds said she is curious as to whether Barrymore will be “invested in reclaiming the title.” Reynolds is open to selling the wig, but it currently towers over a desk where she lives with her partner in the Australian city of Melbourne. Reynolds said she would be keen to place her wig alongside Barrymore’s for comparison.
This year’s Guinness World Records also already features a number of other records, including the woman with the world’s largest ever feet and a 30-year-old dog who is officially the oldest of all time. Reynolds claimed that while she doesn’t have a background in structural engineering, or large props building, her and her team were able to make something “quite difficult.” After constructing the wig, she was able to successfully wear it and display the accomplishment on social media.
Reynolds also mentioned that Barrymore had an entire team work on her wig while all Reynolds had was herself and Meg Wilson. Additionally, there is a balance between the wig’s size and weight, and Reynolds needed to make sure the wig wouldn’t be too heavy to wear. Furthermore, Reynolds was unsure what she plans to do with the wig now that she’s accomplished the record-breaking creation.
