A light aircraft had to make an emergency landing in South Africa after the pilot discovered a Cape cobra slithering under his seat. Rudolf Erasmus had four passengers on board at the time, and felt “something cold” slide across his lower back before spotting the venomous snake. After landing, his passengers disembarked shaken but unhurt, but the cobra was nowhere to be found onboard, prompting a search by experts. Erasmus was forced to fly back to his employers with the possibility that the cobra was still onboard. He flew the plane for an hour and a half with a thick jacket, blanket, fire extinguisher, insect repellent and golf club within arm’s reach.
The pilot described being “on high alert” throughout the flight, but the cobra remained hidden. Although the snake was not discovered, it is believed to have escaped unnoticed during or after the emergency landing, or may be hiding deeper within the plane, according to reports. Cape cobras are said to be particularly dangerous, their bite having the ability to kill a victim in 30 minutes. Despite reports to the contrary Erasmus claimed to have no big fear of snakes but said he normally “doesn’t go near them”. He added: “I hope it finds somewhere to go – just not my aircraft.”
