Cam Newton has announced that he’s willing to take on a backup role for an NFL team this year. In a video posted on his Youtube channel, he also revealed the nine teams that he’d be interested in signing with. The list included the likes of Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, Justin Fields, Tua Tagovailoa, Malik Willis, Jalen Hurts, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen and Sam Howell. He also mentioned that he’s open to mentoring young quarterbacks after initially wanting a starting position.
Newton believes there are not 32 better quarterbacks in the NFL than him, and he’s sure that he deserves to be playing in the NFL. Still, he seems to recognize that he might have to be a backup for this season, and he’s more than willing to be one. The QB plans to sign with a team before the start of the season by which he can bring plenty of value not just as a mentor but also as a backup who can step up and handle the main role if needed.
Newton has stated that he wants to be a starter in the NFL again in 2023, but it seems he’s realistic about the state of things at the moment. The nine teams he has highlighted as potential destinations for him are a fascinating mix. It seems that Newton favors younger QBs whom he can mentor while being willing to support established veterans like Rodgers and Watson. Additionally, he mentioned that he would be willing to sign with a team as a backup for certain quarterbacks in this year’s draft class.
Several teams on his list might be more interesting options than others to bring him in either as a mentor or a backup. The Ravens could use a backup QB, and the Dolphins have had some issues regarding the health of their starting QB, Tua Tagovailoa, over the past year. The Bears, on the other hand, would likely benefit from bringing him in to mentor Fields. Ultimately, it’ll come down to which team needs his services the most and where he’ll be willing to play as a backup for the season.
