Jon Rahm was left with the hope of a two-shot swing as play was suspended after seven holes on day three of the Masters due to unrelenting rain. Brooks Koepka, the leader, faced a 12ft par putt while Rahm had a birdie attempt from slightly closer, meaning Rahm could narrow the four-shot deficit that separated the players. Earlier, Rahm complained only of himself after dropping shots on the fourth and fifth. US Amateur champion Sam Bennett entered the break three shots behind Rahm on six under par. Tiger Woods had slumped to last place of the 54 players who made the cut.
US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick made his way up the leaderboard with three birdies and eight pars in 11 holes. Tiger Woods made a record-equalling cut at the Masters, but struggled in round three. The 13th was the easiest hole during round three as 13 birdies and just two bogeys resulted in an average of 4.633. The par-five was lengthened by 35 yards this year. The 14th yielded just three birdies and played to an average of 4.519.
Sandy Lyle revealed how he prepared to end his career with two putts from 12 ft on the 18th green on the Sunday morning after play was suspended due to the weather. In the cold, two-time major winner Collin Morikawa needed a fairway wood to reach the par-three sixth, but hit a stunning shot to set up a birdie. Mist or drizzle may linger through mid-morning on Sunday, with cloudy skies. Dry conditions are expected to return late Sunday morning, with overcast skies becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon.
Towards the end of day two at the Masters, Justin Rose held a lightning jolt of a two-shot lead with three holes of his second round remaining. By the end of the morning session at Augusta National, though, he had lost that advantage to Jordan Spieth – and a few more besides. Spieth, who has not won since capturing his third major at the Open in 2017, moved to seven under par and a two-shot lead as the tournament heads towards its midway point. In-form Englishman Tommy Fleetwood finished with a share of the lead after Friday’s play, alongside Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama. Brooks Koepka made his Masters intentions clear, joining Fleetwood on three under, and with twice champion Bubba Watson a stroke further back during what was an engrossing round of twists and turns.
