Nintendo has announced a new special edition of its Switch OLED console, inspired by its upcoming game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The console features unique artwork on the Joy-Cons and dock inspired by the game, with textured patterns on the back resembling Zen garden raking. Pre-orders for the $360 console have opened, with the console set to be released on 28 April. The game, which will cost $70, will be released on 12 May.
Nintendo has also launched a range of accessories to accompany the special edition console, including Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and carrying cases, both of which are Tears of the Kingdom-themed. The console and accessories are expected to be in high demand, so there may be initial constraints on availability.
In Tears of the Kingdom, players take control of the hero Link, battling evil forces in a cell-shaded version of the imaginary kingdom of Hyrule. The game also includes a new “recall” ability that allows players to ride chunks of rock back to floating sky islands, thereby expanding the game’s playfield. Nintendo released a 10-minute gameplay video showing Link acquiring new abilities to manipulate the world and create new tools, structures, and weapons.
Tears of the Kingdom will be the first Nintendo Switch exclusive to cost $70, but Nintendo Switch Online members can still preorder the game for less if they buy a pair of Nintendo Game Vouchers for $100. Each voucher can be used to pick up a specific game from the Game Voucher catalog, effectively making the game $50 if players select from most of the company’s first-party titles or one of the pricier third-party efforts.
