“I witnessed people being murdered.” Bank manager says she saw shooting during a virtual meeting

On Monday, a shooting took place at a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, where 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon killed four people and injured nine before being killed. Sturgeon had worked at the bank for over a year, having started as a Commercial Development Professional before becoming a Syndications Associate and Portfolio Banker. He had previously interned at the bank for three summers between 2018 and 2020. Sturgeon had graduated from the University of Alabama in December 2020, having completed an accelerated master’s program, and had formerly played basketball and run track in high school. Prior to the shooting, no red flags had been identified as to Sturgeon’s intentions. In a 2018 college essay, Sturgeon had detailed his struggle to fit in at school, although he had hoped to become a better person with maturity.

The shooting at the bank is the latest in a recent increase in gun violence, which has already taken place in over 600 incidents in the US in 2022. In 2021, 48 mass shootings took place in the US, killing 232 people and injuring 575. Sturgeon had worked at the bank for over a year and was described as a good kid from a good family by a former high school friend. Sturgeon’s father, Todd Sturgeon, had worked as a basketball coach and US history teacher at his son’s school.

The university Sturgeon had attended issued a statement expressing their condolences while also stating their support for the community. Other organizations, such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline and Everytown for Gun Safety, expressed their support towards victims of violence and public concern for gun violence. However, there is still no resolution on what actions could be taken to solve the issue of gun violence.
