The popular sports drink, Prime, will soon be back in stock at Aldi supermarkets, according to posts on Twitter by the Prime Tracker account. The product, which is marketed as a rehydration drink, was invented by YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul and went on sale in the UK in June 2019. It proved an instant hit, leading to chaotic scenes when it has been delivered to stores, with customers queuing to buy its eight flavours. Products delivered to Sainsbury’s and Asda have sold out in minutes, leading to inflated prices on eBay and elsewhere. Aldi previously stocked the drink for £1.99 and attracted major queues.
Stocks of Prime will be available from Aldi stores within days, according to the Prime Tracker. However, the account warns that sales may be launched on Sunday, not Wednesday, 20 May, as previously expected. Stores have been receiving “allocations” of Prime deliveries, the Prime Tracker said. It advised customers to phone ahead of visiting stores to check on stock levels. The drink contains vitamin B and electrolytes, as well as coconut water.
Last year, footballer Wayne Rooney asked KSI for a bottle of Prime for the seventh birthday of his son, Kit. Stacey Solomon also struggled to find stock in local supermarkets. The popularity of the drink has led to shortages and fuelled the craze; one pub owner in south-west England is offering Prime as payment. A rare bottle has been flogged for £1,000.
However, the Drinkaware charity warns that sports drinks should only be consumed after “vigorous and prolonged” exercise has stripped the body of fluids and salts. The site adds that rehydration should be balanced with water intake, and notes that isotonic drinks, containing a higher proportion of carbohydrates, may offer more benefits to athletes.
