A startling video filmed on a mobile phone shows the moment a driver in Spain lost control of their vehicle before getting caught in floodwaters. The incident occurred after the driver attempted to traverse an inundated road situated in Molina de Segura on the southern coast of the country. Spain has recently been hit by heavy rains following an extended period of drought.
Up until the recent heavy rains, Spanish weather agency AEMET had been on track to record this year’s spring as the country’s driest since records began back in 1961. However, the rains have caused widespread flooding, particularly in the southern regions of mainland Spain. Flash floods have already claimed the lives of at least three people whilst also causing extensive infrastructure damage.
The frequency and intensity of Spanish floods appear to be increasing. This trend is in line with an anticipated rise in extreme weather events caused by climate change. With the likelihood of more events such as flooding and wildfires, it’s becoming more essential that insurers and other stakeholders utilize technological innovations to assess and the rate the risks of high impact weather patterns.
Though the outcome of the incident remains unclear, other videos of the same event have been posted on social media platforms. These reveal that the driver seemingly came away unharmed. This may suggest that despite the impending increase in extreme weather events, drivers may be able to weather these conditions if they are cautious and act in accordance with governmental guidelines and advice.
