Is Luis Ruelas the Next Jen Shah? Class Action Suit Accuses Luis’ Company of Illegal Phone Scheme

Luis Ruelas, husband of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice, is facing a lawsuit brought by a woman named Juanita Williams who claims his digital marketing company, Digital Media Solutions, made unsanctioned telemarketing calls. The woman is listed on the “Do Not Call” registry and is seeking $1,500 per call from both Digital Media Solutions and the healthcare company, Choice Health Insurance, for which she was transferred to an insurance agent following one of the calls. The company was cofounded by Ruelas in 2012 and he is listed as the executive vice president of business development. 

According to media reports, Ruelas lost his previous job due to stories from his past reflecting poorly on his old employer. It is not the first time allegations have been made against him since he joined the reality show, and rumors circulated during filming of the show’s reunion that he was responsible for a child of one of their cast members receiving harassment and threats. This latest lawsuit could have severe financial implications if convicted, with $1,500 per unsanctioned telemarketing call adding up quickly if the number of illegal calls were high.

While Ruelas has not commented on the situation, his company’s website suggests that it is a leading provider of technology-enabled digital advertising solutions designed to connect consumers and advertisers. Despite the suit, it is unknown whether it will have any effect on his wife’s involvement with the “Real Housewives of New Jersey.” His brother-in-law is also said to be going through a similarly difficult situation, with Ruelas admitting that he always seems to be receiving blame despite claiming his innocence on both issues. Though Ruelas stated on the reunion show that his brother-in-law’s accusations were unfounded, the accusations point to what appears to be a difficult season for the couple in terms of public opinion. 

Unsanctioned telemarketing calls have been costing companies dearly since 2003 when the “Do Not Call” registry was created, with Congress allowing those affected to sue for damages if they receive calls from solicitations they did not request. While companies like Digital Media Solutions are legit businesses that provide advertising services to benefit both sellers and consumers, they still must abide by the law. It is now up to the courts to decide whether or not Ms. Williams is entitled to the damages she is suing for.
